Explore an instrument or voice
Start with music you enjoy, a workable practice setup and a teacher who can explain the next step.
Choose a starting point
Listen to the music you would like to play and identify the instrument or vocal tradition. Then consider your practice space, access to an instrument, maintenance budget and preferred lesson format.
Before buying equipment, ask a prospective teacher what is appropriate for your goals and physical comfort. The pages below give specific questions for that conversation; they do not indicate that a teacher is currently available.
Guitar
Choose the sound and style you want to explore: acoustic accompaniment, classical repertoire or electric guitar. These can require different instruments and teaching approaches.
Piano
Clarify whether your goal is reading classical repertoire, accompanying songs, improvising, or preparing for a named examination. Ask the teacher how the lesson plan supports that goal.
Keyboard
Keyboard lessons may focus on melody, chords, accompaniment or electronic performance. Explain whether you want to play songs, work with a band, or move towards piano repertoire.
Violin
Specify Western classical, Carnatic, Hindustani or another musical tradition when contacting a teacher. Repertoire, posture and approaches to pitch can differ.
Drums
State whether you want drum kit lessons, a specific genre or ensemble playing. Ask how the teacher introduces timekeeping, coordination and listening.
Western vocals
Describe the styles you enjoy and whether your priority is solo singing, choir, songwriting or performing with accompaniment. Ask how the teacher adapts repertoire to the individual voice.
Hindustani vocals
Explain whether you want classical study, devotional repertoire, light music or a combination. Ask how the teacher introduces swara, taal and listening alongside compositions.
Tabla
Tell the teacher whether you are interested in solo study, accompanying vocals or playing with other instruments. Ask how technique, bols and tala are introduced together.
Flute
Specify bansuri or Western concert flute. Ask which tradition, tuning system and repertoire the teacher specialises in before comparing quotes.
Ukulele
Decide whether you want to accompany singing, play instrumental melodies or explore fingerstyle. Ask the teacher to connect early exercises with that goal.
Saxophone
Clarify the saxophone type and whether your interests are classical, jazz, popular music or band performance. Ask about support for complete beginners.
Harmonium
Explain whether you want to accompany singing, play devotional music or study instrumental repertoire. Ask how the teacher balances bellows control, melody and listening.
Veena
Discuss your interest in Carnatic repertoire and ask how the teacher introduces technique, listening and ornamentation. Make your prior musical experience clear.
Sitar
Discuss the musical tradition and repertoire you wish to study. Ask how the teacher introduces tuning, technique and listening before agreeing to a long course.
