Define the match you need

• Name the instrument and style: for example, acoustic song accompaniment and classical guitar are different learning goals.
• Explain what you can already do and what you want to work towards. A short example is more useful than only saying beginner or advanced.
• List the language you prefer, practical lesson times, online or in-person preference, and a budget you are comfortable discussing.

Ask for evidence of a teaching fit

Ask how the teacher would plan your first lessons, give feedback and adapt when a learner struggles. Performance experience or an examination result does not on its own explain how someone teaches.

• Request relevant qualifications and their awarding organisation if qualifications matter to your goal. Check the specific claim instead of relying on a generic verified label.
• Ask for a demonstration of an explanation, a sample practice assignment or an introductory conversation. Confirm whether any trial is paid before booking.
• For examination preparation, ask about the exact board, instrument and syllabus. A teacher's certificate does not automatically establish an affiliation with an examination board.

Observe before committing

During an introductory lesson, note whether instructions are understandable, feedback is specific and the pace suits the learner. You should leave knowing what to practise and how to tell whether you are doing it correctly.

For children, agree who may attend, how adults communicate with the teacher and whether any recording is permitted. Ask about arrangements for collection and supervision when lessons are in person.

Compare written terms

• Record lesson duration, frequency, format, class size and total payable amount.
• Ask what happens when either side misses a lesson, how much notice is required and when a package expires.
• Check the cost of materials, examination entry, venue use or travel, and retain a copy of the provider's refund terms.
