Find a music academy or centre

Compare independent academies by the lesson experience and practical arrangements, as well as the location.

Confirm who will teach

An academy name does not tell you who teaches your weekly lesson. Ask for the assigned teacher, their relevant background, the usual group size and what happens if they leave or are absent.

Ask whether beginners and experienced learners share a class. Find out how much individual feedback each learner receives and whether the class follows a fixed syllabus or adapts to individual goals.

Visit the actual lesson space

  • Confirm the full address and visit at the time you would normally travel. Check the whole journey, including waiting and collection time.
  • Ask about instrument access, tuning and maintenance. A classroom instrument does not remove the need to discuss a home practice setup.
  • Check access requirements with the academy directly, including stairs, seating, toilets and any adjustments the learner needs.
  • For a child, ask who supervises waiting areas, how collection is authorised and how staff communicate with parents.

Understand a group lesson

Observe whether learners spend their time playing, listening with a clear task, or waiting without guidance. Ask how missed material is caught up and whether the teacher can support a different pace.

If ensemble experience matters, ask whether ensemble work is part of the regular lesson or a separately scheduled activity. Do not assume concerts, certificates or examination entry are included.

Get the complete quote

  • Request the number and length of lessons, maximum group size, joining fee and materials charge in writing.
  • Check the rules for holidays, teacher substitutions, missed lessons, refunds and prepaid package expiry.
  • Confirm whether instruments, practice rooms, recitals and examination fees cost extra.

Describe the lessons you are looking for

Send an enquiry with your instrument, level, preferred format and general location. Availability and lesson terms must be confirmed with an independent provider; sending an enquiry does not book a lesson.
